Do Ferdinand Magellan really discovered the Philippines?

Do Ferdinand Magellan really discovered the Philippines?

"First Europeans in the Philippines"

It is not known who the first Europeans were to visit any part of what is now known as the Philippines. However, books published in western Europe before Ferdinand Magellan landed in the southern Philippines in 1521 show that the members of Magellan's 1521 expedition were not. The common belief that Magellan was the first European to reach the Philippine Islands is therefore incorrect.

"Subsequent developments to the east"

In 1515–1516 the Spaniard Juan Díaz de Solís sailed down the east coast of South America as far as Río de la Plata, which he named shortly before he died, while trying to find a passage to the "South Sea".
At the same time, the Portuguese in Southeast Asia made the first European report on the western Pacific, having identified Luzon east of Borneo and named its inhabitants the "Luções", in the modern Philippines.

"What is Luções?"

Luções or phonetically Luzones is the name that the Portuguese explorers in Southeast Asia used to refer to one of the ethnic groups that occupied the island of Luzon around the time of the early 16th century.

The Luções people are written in the documents of Fernão Mendes Pinto (1614); Tomé Pires (whose written documents was published in 1944); and Antonio Pigafetta, the Italian scholar who chronicled the journey of Ferdinand Magellan and published it in 1524.

"Portuguese-Philippines"

Pires noted that they were "mostly heathen" and were not much esteemed in Malacca at the time he was there, although he also noted that they were strong, industrious, given to useful pursuits. Pires' exploration led him to discover that in their own country, the luções had "foodstuffs, wax, honey, inferior grade gold," had no king, and were governed instead by a group of elders. They traded with tribes from Borneo and Indonesia and Philippine historians note that the language of the Luções was one of the 80 different languages spoken in Malacca. When Magellan's ship arrived in the Philippines and East Timor, Pigafetta noted that there were Luções there collecting sandalwood.

The Luções' activities weren't limited to trade however. They also had a reputation for being fierce warriors. Pinto noted that there were a number of them in the Islamic fleets that went to battle with the Portuguese in the Philippines during the 16th century. The Sultan of Aceh gave one of them the of task of holding Aru (northeast Sumatra) in 1540. Pinto also says one was named leader of the Malayans remaining in the Moluccas Islands after the Portuguese conquest in 1511. Pigafetta notes that one of them was in command of the Brunei fleet in 1521.

However, the Luções did not only fight on the side of the Muslims. Pinto says they were also apparently among the natives of the Philippines who fought the Muslims in 1538. Scholars have thus suggested that they could be mercenaries valued by all sides. According to Anthony Reid notes that "the Luções people disappeared from descriptions of the archipelago after the Spanish conquest of Manila in 1571." The island of Luzon still bears their name.

"Books or commentaries on books published before Ferdinand Magellan landed in the Philippines"

Tome Pires, 5 volumes published 1512-1515

The first European reference to the Philippine archipelago appears to have been made by Tomé Pires (1512-1515) who writes, "The Luções are about ten days' sail beyond Borneo. They are nearly all heathen; they have no king, but they are ruled by a group of elders. They are a robust people, little thought of in Molucca. They have two or three junks at the most." They take the merchandise to Borneo and from there they come to Molucca. "The Borneans go to the lands of the Luções to buy gold, and foodstuffs as well, and the gold which they bring to Molucca is from the Luções and from the surrounding islands which are countless; and they all have more or less trade with one another. And the gold of these islands where they trade is of low quality - indeed very low quality ...

Contesão commentary

"This is the first European reference to the Philippine Archipelago, called Luções from its largest and north-westernmost island, Luzon ... Galvao (p.239) informs us that in June 1545 a Portuguese called Pero Fidalgo left the city of Borneo on a junk, and by contrary winds was driven towards the north, where he found an island in nine or ten degrees, which they called dos Luções, because its inhabitants were thus named ... Galvao gives the date of the first known Portuguese visit to Luzon, but it is quite likely that some other Portuguese ship on the China voyage had called before at the Luções, either on purpose or by accident. The Account of the Genoese Pilot (Leone Pancaldo) says that when, in March 1521, Magellan's expedition arrived at the small island of Malhou, in the south-eastern Philippine Islands, the natives informed them that 'they had already seen there other men like them', which suggests that possibly even before 1521 the Portuguese had visited the archipelago.

My opinion in the Republic Act No. 10175 or the Cybercrime Act of 2012

I don't know why everyone is against the Republic Act No. 10175 or the Cybercrime Act of 2012... In my opinion, we need this law to prevent people to be verbally abusive on other particular people because of their infinite and free power on the Internet! Tama nga ang sabi na, "the Computer and Internet is created by the devil!" For the ending of my post, Kung may ngipin nga ang batas na ito, OK! At next time, kayo?

Huawei B200W + Outdoor Antenna!

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN! THE MOMENT THAT YOU'VE WAITING FOR SO LONG! I REPRESENT TO YOU... THE HUAWEI B200 WIFI ROUTER!

Ahem! I promised to everyone last time that i'm going to buy a huawei b200 wifi router that cost 4600 pesos in the sun shop when i saved a enough money to buy this modem but fortunately because of my insufficient amount of money to buy this type of modem... i decided to search on online buy and sell in sulit.com.ph and i found a cheap openline huawei b200 wifi router in full package + outdoor antenna and mounting screws... in cost only 2600 pesos... 50% cheaper than the new one... why it is cheap? because... its a second hand model... a little bit of a scratch but its on functionality... what could be its advantage? its advantage is the second hand model is an openline that you can put anykind of sim cards... from globe, smart, and sun... and the panel antenna is really big enough to receive transmission signals... than the new one in the sun shop... its modem is locked into 1 sim card of course, its only for sun... but the most ridicule is the antenna its so small and the cord is so short that it cannot detect any kind of strong signal from the outside... the connection speed of this modem is not quiet bad...its satisfied me a little... but good... thats all i can say about this modem...

here are the items on that i purchased inside the package...

huawei b200w modem
lan cord
power adapter
outdoor antenna
10 meter cable cord
and some mounting screws...

im having a difficult time to deal with this guy in order to sell me this item on the internet... but i understand because he's a busy person... our deal talks become cool and smooth... in the end of the deal... we just both left with a smile on our faces... thank you!

My Laptop has been fixed!

Yes! For so long... For so many months... I just bought as second hand laptop sata hard disk on a computer parts and repair shop in the nearby town of San Pedro... It cost 1500 pesos, its brand model was hitachi, sata, 80gb... i already bought and install it onto my lenovo g560 laptop but the problem is the onekey theater and the touchpad is not working or probably malfunctioning... because the reason why my laptop has been broken because i failed to reformat the disk because its almost full memory and resulted to malfunction the battery... and next its start up and the last and the worst.. the pxe-e61 media failure... that resulted the disk to failure.. the worst case... i just bought a new laptop disk but my one key theater and touchpad are not working... even i installed it with my drivers.... its still not working though... i search all kinds of articles on the google to fix this problem but the only conclusion formed up in my mind that there some kind of circuit or chips might be broken or burn because of my misuse.... i feel sorry for my laptop... it has a high gaming graphic card... but anyway i can still use some of its controls... except from the onekey theater and the touchpad... FUCK!

the lessons that i learned is... cherish all the things that you take from the others... always thinks a million times before making a decision and lousy moves that could possibly result in good or bad things...

Why our Broadband Sticks are too slow? (Smart Bro, Globe Tattoo and Sun Broadband)

Hi again! I'm going to tell you guys why does your Broadband Modem Sticks download and upload speed are too slow what I mean is... THE SMART BRO, GLOBE TATTOO AND SUN BROADBAND STICKS CONNECTIONS ARE TOO SLOW! Are you getting angry everytime, getting pissed, and throwing your modem stick everytime the connection is slow? Here's why...

1. Network Congestion - there are too many users on your area that's why your connection is too slow. Your lucky if the whole neighborhood or the whole city is being covered by a single tower.
2. Coverage Signal - probably the coverage signal is too weak thats why there is no connection receiving on your modem. Maybe you are too far away from a cellsite and your are covered with weak signals.
3. 2G-3G-4G Network Coverage - if the modem detects HSDPA, 3G or 4G Signals... You are very fortunate! But if your modem detects 2G, GPRS, EDGE or GSM signals... you are also luckily fortunate and expect nice and very slow connection.

4. Time of use - Try to analyse what is the fast connection to receive on various time... For example, the fast connection that your going to receive is 11pm-6am, or 4am to 9am.

5. Provincial Use - try to use this Broadband sticks in the province or out of town. In the province your never gonna experience network congestions even if your connection is 2G, EDGE or even GPRS your going to feel that your P1000 is SULIT! (except from Northwestern Laguna, Cebu City, Davao City, Northern Cavite, Western Rizal, Southern Bulacan and Metro Manila. This is the places that the internet connection on Broadband Sticks are so congested!)

Additional Tips:

* Do not use it for online gaming...
* Do not smash it just like what I done to my Smart Bro plug it...
* Be wise! Angerness will result nothing...
* If you can't handle the angerness on your modem sticks, try to apply for 512kbps for 799 a month.
* Never try the WI-TRIBE 4G BROADBAND... just don't ask me why!
* If you have laptops or wi-fi phones and gonna update on facebook try to go malls or places that have
wi-fi signals... or go to a cafe and rent a computer for 1 hour.

That's all I can share folk... XD
